Ginetta GT Supercup front runner Douglas Motorsport is delighted to announce 2013 Ginetta Junior Champion Harry Woodhead as its first signing for the 2014 Ginetta GT Supercup.
Staffordshire-based 16-year old Woodhead, who dominated the first half of the 2013 Junior season, had his unbeaten winning streak brought to an end at Snetterton by the clever wet set-up on the Douglas Motorsport-prepared G40 of Keith Donegan, which immediately captured his interest for 2014.
Having enjoyed a highly successful début season in 2012 clinching the Junior Teams Championship, Douglas Motorsport moved into the GT Supercup class in 2013 with Andrew Watson. Showing their pace right from the offset in 2013 qualifying on the front row of the grid, the team enjoyed a series of podiums, fastest laps, a pole position start and narrowly missing out on their maiden race victory on several occasions.
“At a recent test in Silverstone I was very impressed with the professionalism and commitment the team showed during the day”, said Woodhead. “Wayne has a wealth of knowledge as a former British Formula Vauxhall Champion driver himself, and now as a BRDC F4 and Ginetta team boss. Having raced in juniors over the last two years, the team certainly knows how to give their drivers a race-winning car. Douglas Motorsport also proved in 2013 that Andrew Watson’s G55 was more than capable of running at the sharp end of the grid, and I’m really looking forward to the season opener in Brands Hatch now!”
Harry’s father Andrew added: “From a father’s perspective the 2013 season was pretty awesome. Ten straight wins gave us the added pressure in the second half of the season to retain our winning streak but it was in fact a clever set-up in the wet on a Douglas Motorsport car that brought our winning run to an end. However it was a blessing in disguise as it changed our approach to the remaining races to consolidate our championship lead with consistent results. This approach is actually the real making of a good GT driver – first you have to finish!”
Team principal Wayne Douglas is very confident of a strong season ahead with his new Junior graduate: “Harry was a class act in Juniors last season and his pace in a recent test in his new Ginetta G55 proved that this step-up is certainly not a challenge too far for him.” Douglas added: “Harry was very professional throughout the test and reacted well to any set-up and weather changes on the day. I’m very confident that we are going to have a strong season together this year. With our second signing to be announced within the next two weeks, I feel that we have one of the strongest driver lineups in the championship.”
